There will be Rhubarb & Rose Petal Jam this year!

A day in the garden is fabulous for the soul, it’s peaceful and calming, allowing time for observation, contemplation and planning.

The weather at the moment is perfect spring weather, warm days and cool nights, although we really could do with a good rain, it has been a dry winter, and the soil is showing it.   We have finished clearing and it’s now time to work on the soil, mulch and prepare for, what they are predicting will be, a hot, dry summer.  The laundry bed is done,

and the citrus bed, needs just a little more work, water and mulch so that it will be easy to maintain. Continue reading

In the Garden – May 2021

As Autumn drew to a close, work was underway to recover the veggie patch and get a few plantings done.  Beds were prepared, root veg seeds planted along with broad beans and garlic.  Self sown lettuce were moved into a neat little row and rocket and silverbeet seedlings, raised from seed sown in recycled cherry tomato and strawberry punnets, were added.  The garlic was up in no time.  The broad beans finally poked through the mulch, but as for the root veg, they were mown down overnight by snails and/or slugs!  I was left feeling very despondent…  But it wasn’t the end of the world and I just decided to leave the bed to rest through the winter so it will be ready for planting in the spring.

Rhubarb & Roses

I hope that I am not becoming to boring with all things rhubarb, the vegie patch and the greater garden… Today I am going back to Rhubarb, yet again. It is proving to be a great staple in our home.

A vegetable that masquerades as a fruit, this wonderful plant is so easy to grow, and even easier to use in the kitchen where it can be prepared for breakfast or dessert, turned into an accompaniment for your favourite pork dish or charcuterie or cheese platter, gosh, it can even be made into an amazing salad!
