It rained yesterday…

Yes, it rained yesterday, not earth shattering news I know, but the gauge was full, and it’s been raining again today.  It’s been so dry, and there are many among us who are excited, happy, relieved, to see the wet stuff falling from the sky.  So with it cold and wet outside, it was a great reason to stay indoors, actually in the kitchen, and cook and keep warm, and that’s exactly what I did!

The evening before, I’d been working in the veggie patch and the parsley needed a good tidy up so had brought in a basket full and popped it in the fridge.  That was the first job, it was washed, picked over and loaded into the dehydrator, with a little bunch set aside in a vase on the hob of the stove.

There will be Rhubarb & Rose Petal Jam this year!

A day in the garden is fabulous for the soul, it’s peaceful and calming, allowing time for observation, contemplation and planning.

The weather at the moment is perfect spring weather, warm days and cool nights, although we really could do with a good rain, it has been a dry winter, and the soil is showing it.   We have finished clearing and it’s now time to work on the soil, mulch and prepare for, what they are predicting will be, a hot, dry summer.  The laundry bed is done,

In the Garden – November 2021

The garden in November was pretty, but brimming with weeds!  The weather was all over the place having us in short sleaves one day and reaching for the winter woollies the next!

On the 12th it began raining, there were weather warnings for a rain band that was going to produce unusual amounts of rain.  The rains continued through the next day, it just rained and rained and rained with our first reading of 60ml!  Flood warnings kept flashing up on the phone, but we are up high, so were lucky.  We’ve had more rain than ever this year, that is compared to what we’ve had in the past five years (that’s how long we’ve been here).  Probably not strange, really, because of the drought we’ve experienced since arriving.  Clearly the drought is over.

Rhubarb & Roses

I hope that I am not becoming to boring with all things rhubarb, the vegie patch and the greater garden… Today I am going back to Rhubarb, yet again. It is proving to be a great staple in our home.

A vegetable that masquerades as a fruit, this wonderful plant is so easy to grow, and even easier to use in the kitchen where it can be prepared for breakfast or dessert, turned into an accompaniment for your favourite pork dish or charcuterie or cheese platter, gosh, it can even be made into an amazing salad!
