The Month that was Christmas!

The month of Christmas began with appropriately themed cooking classes run throughout our district, and finished with fabulous family gatherings…

Cooking classes for kids were all about Christmas treats,

and for the adults there was a meal that was budget friendly, various Christmas dishes from around the world and, of course, the Christmas hamper.

Our Family’s Traditional Trifle

While there are many fancy versions of trifle around, for me, there is no going past the traditional trifle that my mum, and my Nana, used to make!  It takes time, so was really only prepared for special occasions, and you know what, I think that’s what makes it even more of a treat!  The anticipation makes your mouth water as you wait for it to appear on the table during festive celebrations.

Discover Christmas recipes from around the world, and learn of the traditions behind each as we cook.  Many of these recipes have been passed on to me by very dear friends, and they’ve kindly written of their family traditions so that I can share them with you.  Some of the recipes may be familiar to you, while there are some that may surprise as well.  There’s even a recipe that’s cooked the day after Christmas, using leftover roast meat and veg!

On the day you will work together to prepare a variety of festive dishes which will be shared as we sit, relax, eat, chat and share thoughts on what we’ve just cooked and maybe what we’re planning to cook this Christmas.

It rained yesterday…

Yes, it rained yesterday, not earth shattering news I know, but the gauge was full, and it’s been raining again today.  It’s been so dry, and there are many among us who are excited, happy, relieved, to see the wet stuff falling from the sky.  So with it cold and wet outside, it was a great reason to stay indoors, actually in the kitchen, and cook and keep warm, and that’s exactly what I did!

The evening before, I’d been working in the veggie patch and the parsley needed a good tidy up so had brought in a basket full and popped it in the fridge.  That was the first job, it was washed, picked over and loaded into the dehydrator, with a little bunch set aside in a vase on the hob of the stove.

Cook Book Club: The Food of France / La cuisine de France

I may have one or two French, or French inspired recipe books on my shelves, and as you wander from room to room in our home, you are likely to find more!

My French food journey began in earnest, in 2009, on our first visit to France.   As part of my planning, I read everything that I could get my hands on, in an attempt to learn about the culture, the traditions, the food, and did everything I could to try and grasp a little of the language, which is how I met my, now, best friend, Véronique.
